Dr Kwame Anane-Fenin (Engr.)

Director - Senior Lecturer
Mechanical Engineering Department

Profile

Engr. Dr. Kwame Anane-Fenin is a Professional Engineer and Senior lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering with a career dedicated to advancing innovation in engineering solutions and sustainability. He joined Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU) in April 2006 as an instructor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Johannesburg and dual Master of Science degrees—one in Production Engineering and Management from the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and another in Design and Manufacturing from Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Arts et Metiers (ENSAM) ParisTech in France. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Over the years Dr Anane-Fenin has served his department in different capacities. Between 2006 and 2019, he served diligently in various capacities as the Laboratory Coordinator, Industrial Liaison Coordinator, and Assistant Examination Officer. In 2019, he was appointed Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Embracing this role, he spearheaded the establishment of the Engineering Design and Innovation HUB, reigniting a culture of creativity, innovation and technical exploration within the department. Amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he led his team to design and manufacture the Solar powered Automatic Handwashing machine, a significant contribution to CCTU’s efforts to combat the spread of the virus. This achievement paved the way for conversion of the HUB into the Engineering Design and Innovation Centre (EDIC) in 2021, a move approved by the university's management and council. Dr. Anane-Fenin became the Founding Director of EDIC. Under his leadership from 2021 to 2024, the Centre unveiled several groundbreaking projects. These included a briquette-making plant for Funart Ghana Limited, a low-noise food trolley for the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, and the conversion of an internal combustion-powered tricycle into a solar-powered vehicle with funding from Ghana's Energy Commission
He serves on numerous departmental, School of Engineering and University-wide Committees notably Chairman of the Departmental Curriculum Development committee, Chairman of the Vacation School Committee of School of Engineering, member Policy Review Committee, Academic Integrity Committee and an Elected member of the Executive Committee of the Academic Board.
He actively contributes to national initiatives, including hosting the UNDP Refrigerator Energy Efficiency Project in Cape Coast and chairing the CTVET Expert Team responsible for validating the Occupational Standards for Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Anane-Fenin values partnerships with both local and international academic institutions. Notably, he represented CCTU in a consortium with the University of Cape Coast and City Waste Recycling Limited, successfully securing funding from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). This grant mandates the consortium to be the Value Chain Lead on plastics within the Centre of Excellence for Circular Economy project in Ghana.
On the international stage, he is an external assessor for the University of Johannesburg and has been appointed as a postgraduate supervisor at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Kenya. He is currently collaborating with University of South Africa (UNISA) to develop a low-tech water filtration and purification device from bamboo.
Dr. Kwame Anane-Fenin currently serves as the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Manager of CCTU’s AVIC Centre. Under his leadership, the AVIC Centre has been strategically restructured to ensure long-term financial sustainability. By operationalizing and commercializing its Vehicle Servicing Unit, the Centre has achieved remarkable milestones, including servicing over 300 vehicles, fostering strategic partnerships with suppliers and clients, and generating an average monthly revenue exceeding GH₵20,000 since February 2024.
Dr. Kwame Anane-Fenin’s legacy is defined by visionary leadership, relentless pursuit of engineering excellence, dedication to community-centered innovation, and commitment to mentoring the next generation of engineers.
